Founded in 2008, Blue Ridge Discovery Center (BRDC) states that its mission is to inspire curiosity, discovery, and stewardship through the wonders of the Blue Ridge. BRDC has developed a wide array of programs in collaboration with local school systems, public agencies, and other non-profits. Its programs engage all age groups, from children to adults, including professional researchers and amateur naturalists, and focus on natural history exploration, environmental education, research, and community service. Field trips align with school curriculum and immerse students in hands-on science activities, and summer camps feature guided hikes, wildlife exploration, stream studies, and eco-crafts in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Participants can stay in the Historic Schoolhouse at the base of the highest mountains in Virginia during certain programs, and the site also hosts four seasonal Mount Rogers Naturalist Rallies focused on the natural history of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Event venue rental is available at the Historic Schoolhouse, which includes a historic chapel, stone amphitheater, dining hall, natural history library, meeting rooms, and overnight accommodations for 60 individuals.
