Ballet Virginia Academy Classes include ballet, tap, modern, pointe, and contemporary dance. The program offers a Children’s Program with ballet and tap, a Lower School with ballet and modern, an Upper School with a progressive course of study, and an Adult Dance Program with ballet, pointe, and contemporary classes. Academy students take part in annual productions such as The Nutcracker and perform alongside top-tier professionals.
• Ages: 18 months–18 years old
• Schedule: Academy Classes run from September to June; Adult Dance Program classes meet throughout the academy year and summer.
Ballet Virginia was founded in 2008 by Suzanne Lownsbury and Janina Michalski, and by the summer of 2019 it had opened a second academy location in Virginia Beach and launched a full-time professional company. Other artists involved in Ballet Virginia include Lydia Roberts Coco and Lisa McCarty. Ballet Virginia’s mission states a commitment to fostering a lifelong passion for dance through nurturing education, invigorating performances, and artistic excellence, with both academy locations teaching to the whole child by instilling discipline, self-confidence, joy, and a sense of teamwork. The organization is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) with a thriving dance academy of over 400 students plus a full-time professional company, and it relies on contributors and volunteers for financial support and time. Ballet Virginia works with community partners such as The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and Symphonicity and acknowledges support from the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission.
