The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas states that its mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas has been awarded Praesidium Accreditation®, described as the highest honor for child abuse prevention practices, by Praesidium. For over 30 years, WAVY-TV 10’s Coats for Families initiative, which is included in the program’s activities, has been helping those in need by collecting new and like-new coats for all ages and sizes. The Greater West Point Family YMCA location connected with these programs offers 24-hour access. The YMCA notes that what sets it apart is that it makes membership, programs, services, and facilities available regardless of a family or individual’s ability to pay the standard membership and program fees.
