The Recreation Department has been active since 1991. The City’s mission statement for this program is “Creating community for every person, every day through exceptional recreational activities.” The leadership team includes Mayor Terry Carter. All youth sports programs rely on volunteer coaches from parents and community members, and volunteer coaches must have background clearance and be First Aid/CPR certified. Rosters are not made available until after background clearance has been conducted.

Online registration is available through a family account system, and registration is not complete until both the form and payment have been received. Payment must be received along with the form to be added to the roster, and payments can be made by Visa/MC, check, or cash in the exact amount. Some classes may fill before the deadline or be canceled due to low enrollment. For the 2026 Summer Action Day Camp, registration is first-come, first-served depending on space, and a deposit or full payment must be received to reserve a child’s spot; the parent packet includes an acknowledgement of the manual, a registration form, and a liability and release form. Registration forms for summer camp are three pages and must be submitted with either full payment or a deposit.

Youth Gymnastics sessions are 4 weeks long, and both Gymnastics and Karate are monthly on-going programs that can be joined at the start of each monthly session. The Recreation Department follows the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District’s weather delays and cancellations and follows WIAA Heat Advisory and Air Quality guidelines. The City of Bonney Lake does not currently offer specialized recreation programs for individuals with special needs but lists nearby community resources. The Recreation Department helps connect local businesses and families to recreational opportunities, collaborates with the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society, and participates in interlocal and regional services and planning organizations. Funding for the Bonney Lake Historical Marker Project was provided through a grant from the Pierce County Historic Preservation Commission with matching funds from the City of Bonney Lake.
