About

Washington Youth ChalleNGe Academy is a state-run residential and post-residential intervention program that includes academics, leadership, mentoring, personal development, small unit clubs, and educational enhancement activities. The program also includes service to community, a seventh period in the academic design, limited special education services, and activities such as job search, educational appointments, vocational and technical training, return to high school classes, and full-time volunteerism. It combines a quasi-military training approach with supportive mentoring relationships in a highly structured format with an emphasis on student discipline and personal responsibility.

• Ages: 15–18 years old
• Schedule: The program includes a 22-week intensive residential phase and a two year post-residential phase; each class cycle is 147 days, including up to 4 days for home pass and “Launch Placement” activities.
• Price: This is a FREE Life Intervention-Credit Retrieval program.

The Washington Youth ChalleNGe Academy is a National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program established under authority of both federal and state law. Program graduates can recover up to 8.0 credits, which is approximately 1.3 years of high school credits, and these credits are approved by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and taught by certificated teachers. Limited visitors are allowed on campus by appointment only. The mission of Washington Youth ChalleNGe Academy is to provide a highly disciplined, safe, and professional learning environment that empowers at-risk youth to improve their educational level and employment potential and become responsible and productive Washingtonians. The Washington Youth ChalleNGe Academy partners with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Schools to address the need Washington public schools have for focused dropout reclamation and prevention, and residential phase activities include service to community. Anyone 15–18 years old from the state of Washington who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, permanent resident alien, or green card holder may apply.
