Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County After-School & Summer Programs include activities such as tutoring, tech, health and fitness, arts, music, Social Emotional Learning, Triple Play, STEM, cooking, improv, acting, painting, and Power Hour homework help. The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County After-School & Summer Programs is to inspire all young people and empower them to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, caring adults in their community. Leadership connected to the program includes Fred Shuey, Senior Vice President of Ross Stores, and Dena Kindred, Volunteer & Mentoring Coordinator. One testimonial from Club members states that 67% of Club members say the Boys & Girls Club saved their life.
Ross Stores, Inc. is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of America through a three-week program called “Help Local Kids Learn,” where customers in Burlington can make a monetary contribution at their local Ross Dress for Less during checkout to be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County. Ross is the national sponsor of BGCA’s Power Hour, will match the first $400,000 raised in the “Help Local Kids Learn” campaign, and 100% of the funds raised at each Ross store will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs, with 80% directed to a Club in the community. Every $5 donation helps provide one half hour of homework help for a Club youth, and $15 helps keep a kid safe after school.
During the 2015–16 school year, 175,000 meals and snacks were served, and there were 1,721 total youth memberships. Mentoring in the program connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity, and includes leading small groups of Club members through activities of the mentor’s interest and through targeted Boys & Girls Club programs.
