• Ages: 6–16 years old
• Schedule: Camp STIX is a one-week residential camp held July 12–18, 2026
• Price: Cost: $1050
Camp STIX is a one-week residential camp for youth ages 9–16 who have diabetes. Camp STIX Diabetes Programs also runs Camp TWIGS, a day camp in Spokane, WA, that offers education and support to children ages 6–8 years old who have been diagnosed with diabetes, as well as support for their parents and family. Camp STIX Diabetes Programs offers summer camps and community outreach and is dedicated to enhancing the lives of those affected by diabetes through programs that empower, educate, uplift, and promote community. The STIX acronym stands for Support, Tradition, Information, X-citement, and the STIX Way’s core is to embrace community support and participate in supporting others.
Camp STIX is an independent, community-based summer camp in Northeastern Washington for children and teens with diabetes throughout the Northwest, and Camp TWIGS is an independent, community-based day camp in Spokane, WA, serving families of children affected by diabetes in Spokane and the surrounding area through relationships with local hospitals and medical providers. Campers at Camp STIX take part in a “Sticks Ceremony” at the end of the week, where each camper throws a stick into the communal campfire with a word or thought about their experience, and the camp highlights its campfire programs. STIX Diabetes Programs states a desire to serve every child and their family in the area affected by diabetes regardless of background, situation, or ability to pay, and it pursues early connection after diagnosis, provides an opportunity to make friends and eliminate isolation, fosters growth and resilience through leadership skills training, mentor/mentee relationships, Junior Counselor/Counselor relationships, and ongoing leadership roles, and provides positive feedback and education from medical providers.
Campers receive diabetes care from local physicians and other health care providers, including physician assistants, nurses, diabetes educators, and dietitians. The leadership team includes Administrative Coordinator Shelby Lookabill “Stretch,” Community Outreach Coordinator Shelly Blomgren “Stitches,” Camp STIX Camp Director Katie McNamara “Kasbah,” Camp STIX Medical Director Alyson Blum “Antibody,” and Camp TWIGS Camp Director Jacob Thies “Jagger.” Camp STIX Diabetes Programs is a registered non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and Camp STIX was created in 2000.
Families who want their camper to send mail are asked to provide postage and envelopes, since campers can send outgoing mail but cannot send email or texts. The program does not allow care packages; if a care package is received, it is held on-site for pick-up on the last day, and families may bring dated letters or postcards to be delivered on designated dates using a drop-off bin at check-in.
