About

Girls Rock Math is a one-week camp where campers play games, sing songs, create art, and take part in daily arts and crafts projects. Each day includes math activities, math games, real-world problem-solving, partner activities, projects, community building activities, recess, and time outside. Campers also participate in The Circle Up, which is a special time of day when small groups meet with their counselor.

• Schedule: One-week sessions

At Girls Rock Math, learning includes collaboration and emphasizes persistence, strategy building, and mathematical thinking. Campers are placed into small groups with a dedicated counselor, and many of the math activities are done outside. Math games are incorporated into every day of camp, and activities, games, and projects include measuring, finding area and perimeter, computation, graphing, probability, and geometry. Math concepts, skills, and practice are integrated into arts and themed projects so that math is part of the whole day. Each week also includes an introduction to STEM and STEM careers. On Fridays there is a big end-of-the-week celebration where campers thank and appreciate one another and the staff, and everyone receives a pin for their years at camp. The weekly water play day is part of the schedule, and on days when weather keeps campers inside they take part in a camp-themed scavenger hunt.

Teen Leadership participants have daily meetings and leadership activities such as goal setting and providing feedback to one another. Teen Leaders support and mentor campers, work directly with them, and also work as a team to plan and coordinate fun activities such as the Friday Fun festivities. The program for middle schoolers empowers 7th and 8th graders to take a leadership role at camp as Leadership Campers, also called Counselors in Training. Leadership Campers support and work with primary campers throughout the week, help plan activities, lead games, and join in making art and doing math alongside the kids. Middle schoolers in Leadership Camp also have daily projects.

Girls Rock Math states that its mission is to reinforce that math is fun and imaginative and to boost interest and confidence in mathematics. The program notes that community building activities are part of every day and contribute to increased self-esteem and self-image. Staff members are described as experienced teachers who lead and oversee the whole camp class, and the program also describes its staff members as superheroes. Girls Rock Math reports accreditations and accolades, and it operates at over a dozen camp locations across Washington State with new sites launching in Northern and Southern California, as it grows its community of confident young mathematicians.
