About

Swim Lessons at Evergreen Aquatic Center include instructor-led classes where swimmers take part in swim lessons and may later join activities such as lap swim, public swim, and swim practices. The program also connects to other pool offerings like water exercise, water walking, gendered swims, swim meets, exercise classes, social gatherings, and party rentals. Instructor-led classes run for 30 minutes and use a one teacher to four students ratio in the beginner classes.

• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Instructor-led classes run for 30 minutes, with swim lesson programming offered on a month-by-month sign-up basis

Parent-tot classes are available for ages 6 months to 3 years, preschool classes for ages 3 to 6 years, beginner classes for ages 6 to 13 years, and Pre-Teen/Teen classes for ages 13 to 17 years, with adult classes for ages 18 and older. Class placement can be based on skills when appropriate, and class size ratios vary by level, including up to 10 swimmers to one teacher in Parent-tot and Pre-Comp. Swim lesson programming runs on a month-by-month sign-up basis and prioritizes swimmers currently in lessons, and the waitlist restarts after each month. Classes for babies as young as 6 months focus on water adjustment tasks, and adult classes are structured so swimmers learn based on their own speed. The pool offers affordable swim lessons to low income individuals.

During public swim, life jackets are available from toddler to adult sizes, swimmers may be asked to take a swim test for the deep end area, and children under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Children over the age of 6 use the locker room appropriate to their gender, with changing tents available if they require assistance. Lap swim, water walking, and gendered swims use a reservation system, and public swim sessions are available in the afternoons, some evenings, and on Saturdays after swim lessons. The pool also offers rentals for private birthday parties, corporate bonding time, team swims, and other group events, and provides a venue for groups to conduct swim practices, swim meets, exercise classes, and social gatherings.

Recommended or required items to bring include swimming suits, towels, showering supplies if planning to wash after, goggles that do not cover the nose, and swim caps if desired, with both goggles and caps available for purchase at the pool. Toddlers and preschoolers are expected to use swimming diapers, and a lock is needed to use the lockers. Patrons are asked not to bring flotation devices or scuba goggles, and they may bring personal belongings onto the deck. For lap swim and related activities, available equipment includes kickboards, fins, pull buoys, and hand swim paddles; for water exercise, available equipment includes water dumbbells and swim belts; and for public swim, available items include life jackets, pool noodles, and float mats.

Evergreen Aquatic Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) indoor pool that is open all year long and has a 25-yard pool with 9 lanes, showers, changing tents, a diaper station, upgraded lockers that require patrons to bring their own lock, stairs to assist walking into the water, and a chair lift. The shallow end is three feet deep and the deep end is five feet and more, and the pool is 25 yards long and not Olympic sized. The facility has been serving the community since it was built in 1970. In 2009, the 40-year “Forward Thrust” levy expired and eight pools in King County were returned to their public owners to manage, and Evergreen Pool was contractually returned to the Highline School Association in September 2009 and was closed. In March 2010, Whitewater Aquatics Management LLC signed a lease agreement to manage the Evergreen Community Aquatic Center, and in the past 12 years WWAM has continued to offer the same programs and lesson opportunities as previously offered when King County financed the pool operation.

The Evergreen Aquatic Center serves the residents of White Center, Burien, and West Seattle. Whitewater Aquatics Management LLC is a non-profit group of local business leaders and community volunteers that manages the Evergreen Community Aquatic Center to maintain a community swimming pool and its swim programs in order to benefit the community of White Center. The pool represents hope to pool users and community members in the context of crises of opiates addiction and homelessness. The leadership team includes Nicole as Manager, Bryan as Board President, Alyx as Fund Developer, and Nicole Nikula-Lamsen as Aquatic Director. Bryan Hastings is the Assistant Chief at the Seattle Fire Department and has served over 30 years there, and he has been involved with the pool since 2009.
