United Studios of Self Defense students have studied the USSD system since 1968. The Vancouver program is part of what is described as the largest martial arts school in North America and is a veteran owned small business that has been recognized as Best in Clark County for a martial arts studio after twelve years of success. The mission of United Studios of Self Defense is to impact the lives of students and the community through martial arts, using teaching principles and practical training methods that encourage students to overcome emotional, mental, and physical obstacles to become the best version of themselves.

Master Matt Quinlan is the Chief Instructor and is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo with over three decades of martial arts training in multiple systems. The broader leadership lineage named for the program includes Professor Charles A. Mattera, Honorable Grandmaster Nick Cerio, George Pesare, Kenpo Master Ed Parker, William “Thunderbolt” Chow, and Professor Thomas H. Burdine. The studio uses an Informed Instruction methodology that connects traditional Shaolin Kempo with modern neuroscience, with training described as fostering cognitive development and emotional intelligence, and instructors are described as experienced and trained to meet the needs of every student.

USSD Vancouver notes that martial arts offers growth opportunities for people with mental health and cognitive development disorders and offers customized training for each student based on individual goals and physical needs. Group classes are described as providing a community of supporting students, families, and motivating instructors, while private instruction offers a weekly personalized training option with skilled instructors. Community involvement includes Master Matt seeking out veterans who are struggling with civilian life and inviting them into the dojo for the support he sought after combat.
