• Ages: 5–18 years old
Since 1968, students have studied United Studios of Self Defense’s unique system of Kempo-style martial arts from instructors in the United States. The Vancouver program is led by Master Matt Quinlan, Chief Instructor and 5th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo, who has over three decades of martial arts training in multiple systems. The mission of United Studios of Self Defense is to impact the lives of students and the community through martial arts, using proven teaching principles and practical training methods to encourage students to overcome emotional, mental, and physical obstacles. United Studios of Self Defense is described as the largest martial arts school in North America and has recently achieved Best in Clark County for a Martial Arts Studio. The program uses an Informed Instruction methodology that bridges traditional Shaolin Kempo and modern neuroscience, with training that focuses on cognitive development, emotional intelligence, and the “Neuroscience of the Fight,” including how the nervous system responds to stress and how to move from “survival” (fight or flight) to “intentional action.” Group classes are described as having a community of supporting students, families, and motivating instructors, and private instruction once weekly offers a personalized training opportunity with skilled instructors. All ages are welcome and encouraged to meet the team, and the program states that martial arts offers growth opportunities for anyone navigating life with mental health and cognitive development disorders, with Informed Instructors creating a safe and supportive environment for cognitive development and emotional intelligence.
