About

Vancouver Art Gallery Youth and School Programs include exhibition tours and hands-on workshops. School Programs offer exhibition tours and hands-on workshops designed for elementary and secondary school groups. Guided Gallery tours are led by a trained Art Educator, and each tour is unique and reflects the guide’s passions and interests. Private Tours are one-hour long tours led by a trained Art Educator with a choice of an exhibition, and self-guided school groups can explore the Gallery independently through self-guided visits that must be booked in advance.

Founded in 1931, the Vancouver Art Gallery is recognized as one of North America’s most innovative visual arts institutions. Its exhibitions explore the impact of images in the larger sphere of visual culture, design and architecture, with special attention given to the accomplishments of Indigenous artists and those of the Asia Pacific region through the Centre for Global Asias. The Gallery’s new Art of Wellbeing lab promotes the role of art in fostering health and wellbeing and is developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, researchers and Indigenous Elders. The mission of the Vancouver Art Gallery is: “Through art we create paths to share perspectives, build and engage communities and shape our collective future together.”

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s School Programs are part of a not-for-profit organization supported by its members, individual donors, corporate funders, foundations, the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia through the British Columbia Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Through the generous support of Canada Life, the Community Partnership Program provides complimentary admission to non-profit, equity-seeking organizations that serve historically marginalized communities. The Vancouver Art Gallery commits to providing equitable access to everyone and actively supports accessibility, anti-racism, 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion and encourages diversity in staff, visitors, volunteers and programming. The Gallery is situated within the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and is respectful of the Indigenous stewards of the land it occupies.

The Governance & Nominations Committee is comprised of Esther Rausenberg (Co-Chair), Josh Vander Vies (Co-Chair), Dana Claxton, Geoff Meggs, Priscilla Lam and Jon Stovell (VAGA Board Chair). The plazas and squares adjacent to the Gallery are public spaces utilized by the community for numerous self-organized activities, protests and events, and the Gallery has no role in approving, determining or overseeing these activities. The Gallery is wheelchair accessible, with street-level access through the Hornby and Robson Street entrances during all public hours, and wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis or by reservation by calling 604.662.4700. Self-serve storage lockers are available and are free for Members and visitors with admission to store coats, backpacks and other large items that are not permitted inside the Gallery.
