Beaver Creek Reserve Summer Camps are part of a program whose mission is “Connecting People with Nature.” The reserve includes more than 400 acres of diverse habitat such as upland woods, river bottom forests, wetlands, and savannah areas, and it is bordered by the Eau Claire River with two trout streams and nearly 9 miles of hiking trails. Features connected to the camp setting include the Wise Nature Center, Youth Camp, Citizen Science Center, Hobbs Observatory, Wildlands Charter School, a seasonal Butterfly House open July 5 through Labor Day, sleeper cabins, and an all-terrain outdoor wheelchair available to explore the trails. The Wise Nature Center is 100% solar powered.
Beaver Creek Reserve began in 1947 when a group of Eau Claire County residents founded the original 160-acre Eau Claire Youth Camp, which has grown into a year-round environmental education and recreation destination in Western Wisconsin. In 1985, a group of individuals created the Friends of Beaver Creek Reserve, and in 2008 the Friends assumed daily operations of Beaver Creek Reserve. Friends of Beaver Creek Reserve raises funds and implements programs at Beaver Creek Reserve while working alongside Eau Claire County.
Families involved with Beaver Creek Reserve programs can take part in community activities such as the Christmas Bird Count, which is the nation’s longest-running community science bird project. Youth and families participate in numerous activities that expose them to the natural world around them. The observatory is open on clear Saturday nights from May through October, and the Butterfly House is open July 5 through September 1, Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and Sunday from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. The Christmas Bird Count runs on December 15, 17, 20, and January 3 and 5 from 7:00 am to around noon, Hike by Candlelight is offered on January 9 (6–9 pm), January 29 (6–8 pm), and February 13 (21+) (6–9 pm), and Make Your Own Snowshoes is scheduled for January 10–11 and February 7–8. Beaver Creek offers both snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, and participants may bring their own snowshoes for Candlelight Hikes or rent some if there is enough snow.
