About
Balance Inc. Children’s Programs include an after-school program that focuses on social skills for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), along with a summer camp that offers three weeks of sun, swimming, and socialization with a group of their peers. Children are introduced to new activities multiple times in a gentle way before being asked to participate fully. The broader Balance programs include various outings, volunteer projects, and activities that take participants into the community at least once and often two or more times per day.

Founded in 1991, Balance Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in and around Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Balance operates five specialized programs for children and adults with special needs, including Adult Family Homes that offer family-style living with 24/7 care and supervision, an Adult Day Program with frequent community activities, Adult Supported Living with drop-in services, a Children’s Social Skills program, and Children’s Summer Recreation where each child is paired with an Adventure Buddy. The Children’s Social Skills program offers a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where young people can build interpersonal skills and try new experiences in a safe and loving space. Balance states that it is dedicated to improving the quality of life for adults and children with IDD through community-based programs that respond to each person’s goals, dreams, and needs, and that it strives to empower each individual to determine the direction of their life. Balance notes that its community-based programs also increase the community’s capacity to understand and embrace individuals with special needs. Rebecca Jackson is Balance’s CEO. One parent of two adult children with ASD describes Balance as a place where, when her son is there, she can mentally relax and not be on constant alert, calling it “an absolute Godsend” for her and her family.
