Since 4-H began more than 100 years ago, it has become the nation’s largest youth development organization, with more than six million members and over 90,000 clubs. In Wisconsin, more than 26,000 youth are members of 4-H, and Wisconsin 4-H has over 5,600 volunteers who serve as mentors for 4-H youth. 4-H states that its mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential working and learning in partnership with caring adults. Clubs and groups connected with Wisconsin 4-H Camps offer camps throughout the state, and building community clubs to help solve agricultural challenges was an early focus for youth learning about industries in their communities. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law.

Camp Counselors at Wisconsin 4-H Camps are described as trusted guides, supports, and leaders who help make sure campers have a safe, welcoming, and meaningful experience. The program performs background checks on youth and adults who work as counselors and trains them to manage any needs that a young person might have. Camp experiences are available for young people with an array of physical and developmental needs, and it is important for families to share any information needed to help their child when registering for a camp experience. 4-H camps are carefully reviewed to ensure they meet program guidelines, and safety is stated as the first concern. For decades, parents have trusted 4-H camps to help young people build resilience by engaging in positive risks, and at 4-H camp, children learn critical life skills and independence. Whether through summer camp, winter camp, day programs, virtual camps, or other programs, Wisconsin 4-H Camps promotes Youth Development principles that include competence in lifetime skills; confidence in self and others; connection with nature, 4-H leaders, and fellow 4-H members; caring for the environment, themselves, their peers, and leaders; and character for today’s experiences and tomorrow’s challenges.
