Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts began on October 14, 2004, when local artists and community members led by founding board members Jim Kackley, Sandra Scott, and Judy Sutcliffe purchased the property and launched a nonprofit arts education center. The organization’s mission is to provide educational experiences in visual, performing, and literary arts for adults and children; cultivate the creativity that thrives in its rural community; and rehabilitate and preserve its historic buildings and rustic campus. It is described as Mineral Point’s nationally known 501(c)3 nonprofit school of arts and crafts. The Free Arts Camp is supported by community partners, and annual events include family-friendly activities such as the Tour of Fairy Homes, Santa Day, and a free Trick ‘r Treat event following the Mineral Point Halloween Parade. Students come from all over the country to join activities at Shake Rag Alley, and visitors are welcome dawn to dusk to stroll the grounds using a self-guided tour brochure.
The campus includes nine buildings on 2.5 acres of gardens, trees, and rambling paths, a natural limestone amphitheater called Alley Stage, a monarch way station, and 20 individual garden beds, along with space for large gatherings in the Lind Pavilion. Lodging is available in the historic Coach House and The Sardeson, part of the 1868 Globe Hotel, and workshop participants are eligible for discounts on Shake Rag Alley lodging. The leadership team includes Executive Director Christina Kubasta, Assistant Director Jonna Wensel, Registrar/Bookkeeper Donna Peterson, Administrative Coordinator Clara Kassebaum, Youth Program Manager Mack Champion, Buildings & Grounds Manager Mike Kutzke, Marketing Assistant Megan Kulick, and Gardens & Grounds Technician Steven Reineke, with a Board of Directors and Board Emeritus providing governance.
