• Ages: 5–18 years old
Since 1946, campers of all ages have attended Camp Zion, which was originally named “Zion Camp,” briefly renamed “Camp Winnebago” in the early 1950s, and then became “Camp Zion.” In the late 1930s, organizers began overnight youth ministry campouts, and in 1946 the group camped near the present location, with the first waterfront lot on the present site purchased in 1947. Additional land was added over the years through a 1962 rental agreement for approximately 3 acres of adjacent land, purchases of 14.5 acres in 2001 and 12.01 acres in 2016, and a 2.5-acre gift in 2007, bringing camp-owned land to a total of 31.38 acres. In 1998, the decision was made to establish a full-time camp director position, and Executive Director Dale Stewart and his family moved permanently to Ellison Bay in 2000; Dale Stewart now serves as Executive Director, and Dale and Carol Stewart serve in the Camp Office.
Camp Zion states that its mission is to invite people to take a break from the pace of everyday life, experience God through His Word and His creation, and discover the life-transforming power of Jesus Christ, describing camp as a unique environment and temporary community where fun activities, outdoor recreation, and meaningful worship times work together to move hearts and minds toward a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe. Camp Zion is open year-round and offers summer youth camps as well as guest group retreats and camps of many kinds, using mostly volunteer staff and maintaining a tradition of popular, well-run programs. The camp is a charter member of the Christian Camp & Conference Association and is a ministry of Christ Community Church of Zion, Illinois, which is a member of the National Association of Evangelicals.
Camp Zion describes itself as Door County’s Christian Camp and notes that it has called Door County home since 1946, becoming a long-standing fixture in the northern peninsula. The camp reports that children and youth, their parents, adults, volunteers, and staff return repeatedly, frequenting local restaurants, shops, and businesses and contributing to the local community and economy, and that it has become a favorite camp destination for many local Door County children.
