About

Space Camp includes hands-on, interactive space missions where campers train like an astronaut through astronaut training exercises and simulated space missions. The program features aquatic team-building activities, engineering challenges, and other team-building experiences, along with Space Works Lab activities, the STEAM Literature Series (SLS), and Spark!Lab hands-on invention workspace activities. Campers can also use the VR Explorer virtual reality motion-based simulator, experience the physics of astronaut training in simulators like Moon Shot and G-Force, attend live shows in the INTUITIVE Planetarium and STEM on Stage, and stroll through historic Rocket Park.

Space Camp launched in 1982 and has been operating for more than 42 years as an internationally known program with more than one million alumni. It is based on NASA astronaut training and focuses on teamwork and leadership skills, with campers cultivating teamwork, leadership and decision-making skills through simulated missions. Space Camp offers space, aviation and robotics camps to children between the ages of 9 to 18, adults of all ages, families, and educators, and family programs may include children as young as seven years old. Special programs are offered for trainees who are blind or visually impaired, and for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and camp programs are also available for adults, educators, corporate groups and families.

Space Camp is the brainchild of Edward O. Buckbee, the first director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and rocket scientist Dr. Wernher von Braun, who led the development of the Apollo-era rockets that took America to the moon. The USSRC Board includes Chair Mr. Rey Almodóvar, Vice Chair Rep. Joe Lovvorn, Secretary Dr. Waymon Burke, Treasurer Mr. Joe Newberry, MG (Ret.) Jim Rogers, Mr. David Azbell, MG (Ret.) Barbara Fast, Ms. Nicole Faulk, Mr. Joe Fitzgerald, Mr. Homer Hickam, Mr. J. Scott Hunter, Mr. Wes Kelly, Col. (Ret.) Roosevelt Lewis, Mr. Joe Newberry, Sen. Arthur Orr, Ms. Lisa Williams, Dr. Virginia “Suzy” Young, and Mr. John Nerger as Emeritus.

The program is described as the oldest and largest STEM camp in the world and is based at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, surrounded by space, aviation and defense artifacts. Space Camp alumni include NASA and ESA astronauts, engineers, scientists and technologists, and attendees have come from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and 150 foreign countries. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the Official NASA Visitor Center for Marshall Space Flight Center and a Smithsonian affiliate, and the Saturn V Moon Rocket there is a National Historic Landmark. Pathfinder is one of only two full-stack space shuttle displays in the world, the INTUITIVE Planetarium is a planetarium with a 67-foot dome theater, Spark!Lab is a hands-on invention workspace included with museum admission, and Space Works is a makers lab with technological equipment and classroom tools designed for students aged 12 and older. Because of the technological equipment and the dexterity and skills necessary to safely operate classroom tools, Space Works Lab activities are designed for middle and high school students aged 12 and older.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center annually hosts visitors from every state in the U.S. and more than 80 foreign nations who come for immersive education and experience, and it features a nonprofit organization each week to support the local community. One visitor described it by saying, “What a great way to spend a day! ... This is a hands-on museum, so if you have children, this is for them!... I'm so glad I stopped!”
