Space Camp STEM Programs are part of Space Camp, which is based on NASA astronaut training and is the brainchild of Edward O. Buckbee and Dr. Wernher von Braun. Space Camp has been inspiring the next generation of explorers since 1982 and focuses on teamwork and leadership skills. Space Camp is described as the ultimate educational experience that illuminates real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and challenges campers to transcend from “What if?” to “Can do!”. Space Camp is the oldest and largest STEM camp in the world, with more than 1 million alumni and attendees from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and more than 150 foreign countries. It is home to four STEM education programs—Space Camp, Aviation Challenge, Space Camp Robotics, and U.S. Cyber Camp—and offers special programs for trainees who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, as well as camp programs for adults, educators, corporate groups, and families, with family programs that may include children as young as seven years old.
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, where Space Camp STEM Programs are based, is the Official NASA Visitor Center for Marshall Space Flight Center and a Smithsonian affiliate, and it holds the National Historic Landmark Saturn V Moon Rocket as a notable artifact. Its rocket and space hardware collection includes more than 1,500 items, including Pathfinder, one of only two full-stack space shuttle displays in the world, the Apollo 16 Command Module, the Skylab Orbital Workshop, and an Apollo 12 Moon Rock. The INTUITIVE Planetarium at the center features live shows in a 67-foot dome theater. To support the local community, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center features a nonprofit organization each week.
The leadership team connected with this program includes Chair Mr. Rey Almodóvar, Vice Chair Rep. Joe Lovvorn, Secretary Dr. Waymon Burke, Treasurer Mr. Joe Newberry, MG (Ret.) Jim Rogers, Mr. David Azbell, MG (Ret.) Barbara Fast, Ms. Nicole Faulk, Dr. Joe Fitzgerald, Mr. Homer Hickam, Mr. J. Scott Hunter, Mr. Wes Kelly, Col. (Ret.) One parent testimonial states, “Your kids will love visiting @rocketcenterusa in Huntsville, Alabama... It’s a must-see for any aviation or space enthusiast - and especially for those of us who loved the 1980s movie [Space Camp]! It’s not too late to go with their family space camps” (Jayda J).
