The mission of Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee is “To inspire, teach, & enable the youth of Bisbee and nearby rural border areas, especially those who need us most, to have fun while realizing their full potential as productive, healthy, responsible & caring citizens.” One youth member, Briella R, says, “I like doing activities like hangman, playing school with my friends, dancing, and playing twister!” Another member, Natalie M, says, “It's really fun and all of our art gets hung up around the club. The art we create causes memories.”
The Club’s history includes a decision in August 1999 to affiliate with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a foundation-sponsored luncheon on December 16, 1999, and a first public information meeting on December 29, 1999. The Club was incorporated in April 2000, received 501c3 status in July 2000, and hired Katina Lugo in November 2001 as the first Executive Director. An open house was held at the end of April 2002, and the first official day serving youth was May 6, 2002. The Club is described as 17 years old and serving over 600 youth annually.
Leadership roles listed for Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee include Chief Professional Officer Annette Flores and FB/Website Manager Megan Escalante. Katina Lugo is listed as the first Executive Director. The incorporators of the Boys & Girls Club of Bisbee, Inc. are Dan Fahy (President), Sam Sorich (Vice-President), Susan Rohrbach (Treasurer), and Dennis Nelson (Secretary), with other steering committee members Maureen Kappler, Roberto Vasquez, Katina Redman, and Terri Arreola. Board of Directors officers elected in fall 2000 were Tom Weiskopf (President), Bob Butler (Vice-President), Joe Delgado (Treasurer), and Terry Reyna (Secretary).
The Club is described as one of two Boys & Girls Clubs in Cochise County along the International Border with Mexico, and the community is described as very supportive and the Club as always looking for donations. A fund was set up in trust with the Arizona Community Foundation for the expressed purpose of developing and sustaining a Club for Bisbee. One unique feature is a Summer Program Scholarships campaign with a goal of $10,000, where 100% of contributions are forwarded by ECC SAY, LLC to qualified charity partners along with other designated gifts. Each charity in this Challenge receives a 25% matching grant (up to $5,000 collectively per organization), and additional bonus grants ranging from $5,000 (1st place) to $1,000 (5th place) are awarded to partners who raise the most donations through the Challenge. The FoodFinder app is listed as a resource for finding a food pantry.
