About the provider
Camp Colton was created in 1971 as Project LIFE (Life In the Flagstaff Environment). In 1976, the property was donated and the environmental education program was renamed Camp Colton. Friends of Camp Colton was established in 2001. Friends of Camp Colton is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and the Arizona Daily Sun recognized Camp Colton, including FUSD and Friends of Camp Colton, as the organization of the year in 2011.
FUSD students attend the 6th grade program at no cost as an integrated part of their science studies, with expenses offset by FUSD, Arizona school tax credit donations, and funds raised by Friends of Camp Colton. Students from charter, private, and other school districts pay a tuition fee, with Fellowship support available for students identified by their school as low income. Need-based scholarships are available for Colton Adventure Camp.
What families say
“After going to Camp Colton I appreciate nature even more than I did before and I think that humans should work harder to protect our Earth.” — Adrianna, age 12
“Camp helped us be more independent and develop our life skills. I learned how to be a student outside of the classroom and how to make new friends. But, the most important thing I learned is how I can protect my environment.” — Alex, age 12
“Camp Colton is one of the best and most memorable things our students get to do. We see our kids in a different environment which helps us get to know them. Camp forces kids to make friends and work as a team in a positive way.” — Mr. Laird, Science Teacher
