About

Tynkertopia offers monthly classes, summer camps, birthday parties, and field trips that focus on creativity, inquiry, and STEAM knowledge and skills. The program is less of a classroom and more of an environment for experimentation, discovery, learning, and fun, guided by the motto “Think with Your Hands, Learn by Doing.” Drop-ins are free, and the center serves between 10 and 60 visitors each day.

• Schedule: Open Tuesday through Saturday with four-week classes and weeklong camps
• Price: Drop-ins are FREE, with a suggested $3–$5 donation per child; four-week classes range from $30–$60; weeklong camps cost $130.

Tynkertopia is a nonprofit community center and non-profit education center that describes itself as Flagstaff’s STEAM Education Center and a free-to-all STEAM Center. It is designed for kids, parents, teachers, and community members and is described as a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for students, teachers, parents, artists, crafters, inventors, makers, and tynkerers of any age. Over 8000 kids, parents, grandparents, teachers, and community members have visited Tynkertopia in its first 17 months.

Tynkertopia’s mission is to serve as a STEAM Education Center to empower residents of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona to cultivate skills, strategies, and confidence as independent, lifelong learners and to expand creativity, inquiry skills, literacy skills, and STEAM skills and knowledge by inviting curiosity, inspiring wonder, encouraging playfulness, and celebrating unique solutions. Tynkertopia partners with the US Department of Agriculture and St. Mary’s Food Alliance to offer a free meal to every child between 1- and 18-years of age who visits Tynkertopia and welcomes community collaborations in which partners work together to share expertise, resources, and responsibility for achieving mutual goals.

Tynkertopia was a 2021 Viola Awards Finalist in the STEAM category. Dr. Alice Christie describes Tynkertopia as a natural culmination of her experiences teaching science and technology, as well as reading and writing, for over 50 years. Visitors describe Tynkertopia as a great community asset and an amazing addition to Flagstaff, and several testimonials highlight that Tynkertopia offers STEAM education free and accessible to all the children of Flagstaff. Parents report that their children love creating and exploring there, that birthday parties are personalized and fun, and that different stations cater to different age ranges.
