About
Coach Decker’s Martial Arts offers kids’ classes that include Mat Monkeys martial arts for kids, Little Ninjas Karate classes, Jr Samurai Karate classes, Judo, and martial arts-themed physical education. The program also offers yoga, kickboxing, and self defense. Classes are currently offered at Eagle Community Center.
• Ages: 4–17 years old
• Schedule: Classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4:30–8:00, with office hours by appointment
Coach Decker began his journey in the early 90s teaching traditional martial arts to all ages and backgrounds, and in the mid-2000s Phoenix College asked him to join their fitness and wellness department to share his approach with their community of students, teachers, and staff. The program’s stated focus is to give students individual and group martial arts training in a range of styles for adults, children, and everyone in between, and to instill core values and life skills such as respect, discipline, self-esteem, self-control, mental focus, agility, and fitness into students’ mind, body, and spirit. The program includes Mat Monkeys and Jr. Judo programs and uses a Dojo Dollars program that allows students to get snacks and other goodies after class.
The program describes its approach as not new but unique in its scope, based on a philosophy commonly attributed to the Samurai of feudal Japan. It states that one who embraces the Warrior lifestyle commits to regular practice in three pillars: Three States of Mind (Zanshin alertness/awareness, Mushin clear mind, Fudoshin emotional balance), Five Keys to Health for the body (rational nutrition, sensible exercise, efficient rest, proper hygiene, positive attitude), and Seven Virtues for spirit/character (rectitude, courage with self-control, benevolence, politeness/propriety, honesty/sincerity, honor, duty/loyalty). The program’s site is described as an aid and supplement to current students and also as a way to reach and help others no matter their circumstances or location.
Parents describe Coach Decker as a wonderful coach who works great with kids, encourages them in a positive way, and is down to earth and knowledgeable about self defense and martial arts. Several parents mention the Mat Monkeys and Judo classes for their young children, including starting at age 4, and say their children have learned basic judo, independence, respect, listening, participating with other students, and trying new things. Parents also note that their children look forward to classes twice a week, that the facilities are clean, and that the environment is fun and supportive while teaching discipline and safety. One adult student reports attending kickboxing twice a week for over a year and a half, describing classes that include stretching, warm ups, shadow boxing, strength training, and pad work with partners, and notes that coach teaches the 10 main kickboxing moves and explains them for beginners.
