About
Sedona Dance Academy offers classes in dance styles including modern, ballet, jazz, Dunham Technique, African dance, tumbling, Latin, flamenco, hip hop, Latin fusion, and leaps and turns. The program describes itself as more than a dance class and as an immersive community fostering friendship, artistry, athleticism, and soul.
Sedona Dance Academy was founded in 2020. The Artistic Director is Jessica Phillips, who is also the founder of Sun & Moon Studio of Sedona and is a former professional ballet dancer and educator who trained at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., with additional studies at The School of American Ballet and Houston Ballet, and who joined Ballet Arizona at eighteen and spent nine seasons performing a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire. Danielle Johnson began her dance training in New York, earned scholarships to study at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theater, received a scholarship to study dance at Arizona State University where she earned her BA in Dance, holds a master’s degree in education, and has over 20 years of professional dance experience. William Sterling Walker III began his dance training at age 14 with Chamber Ballet (now Virginia Regional Ballet), received the Artistic Merit Award from the Virginia School of the Arts, was a Regional Dance America scholarship recipient, trained additionally with Allegheny Ballet Company and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and has performed professionally as a soloist with Richmond Ballet, Starr Foster Dance Project, Chris Burnside and Dancers, Charisma Dance Theater, and the Latin Ballet of Virginia; he is a certified Wolf Trap teaching artist for children and spent 11 years teaching ballet, jazz, modern, Latin, flamenco, and hip hop at the Henrico County High School for the Arts and the School of the Latin Ballet of Virginia, where he also served as Junior Company Director. Lora Kelsey recently retired from a professional career as a dancer and circus performer in Las Vegas and has worked as a teacher, choreographer, director, and producer for a talent agency. Kay Phillips is the virtual assistant, accountant, and ESA specialist for Sedona Dance Academy and started her career as a computer scientist working for NASA in Houston, Texas, later transitioning to selling real estate. Jessica Phillips is described as deeply committed to enriching the cultural life of the Sedona community through education, performance, and collaboration, and Lora Kelsey is described as excited to become involved within the Sedona arts community. The program notes that parking is limited at the Studio B location.
