About
SARSEF Programs offer science and engineering experiences through critical thinking programs that reach students in schools and in out-of-school settings. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, 5,467 students directly participated in these in-school and out-of-school programs, and a total of 35,682 Arizona students were impacted through one or more SARSEF critical thinking programs. In the same year, 322 schools participated in SARSEF’s goal to provide quality STEM education to students.
SARSEF’s mission is creating Arizona’s future critical thinkers and problem solvers through science and engineering. The organization focuses on engaging student populations underrepresented in STEM and prioritizes creating low- to no-cost opportunities for students in schools with higher percentages of low-income families. SARSEF fosters communities of support for students in STEM by building the confidence and toolboxes of teachers, administrators, caregivers, and community members.
SARSEF educators travel to schools and community centers throughout the state to provide student outreach, teacher professional development, and family workshops. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, 78% of participating students were from areas of poverty, and 3,145 students participating in outreach programs were from rural areas. In that same year, $160,000 in scholarships and awards were provided to students to attract and retain their interest in STEM fields.
Among participating teachers, 96.5% were able to integrate state standards for math and science as their students worked on their research projects. According to reported outcomes, 96% of students say projects encourage them to ask more questions or solve more problems in the future, and 100% of teachers said their students gained skills they will carry with them in their future careers using science and engineering.
