The mission of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is to inspire people to live in harmony with the natural world by fostering love, appreciation, and understanding of the Sonoran Desert. The Desert Museum states that it is dedicated to providing a naturalistic and enriching sanctuary for its animals and plants, and a clean, friendly, entertaining, and educational experience for its guests. The Desert Museum is a natural home to a variety of native wildlife such as rattlesnakes, scorpions, lizards, birds, and spiders that come and go. Need-based Discount Applications and camp financial assistance are available, and campers receive a Desert Museum camp shirt. Families are encouraged to prepare for the Sonoran Desert adventure with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, water in a reusable water bottle, and comfy shoes, and to follow Museum rules that do not allow outside food and beverages, smoking or vaping, glass containers, weapons, skateboards, scooters, bicycles, balloons, or whistles on the grounds.
