About
Kids Up Reading Tutors offers live, 1-on-1 online tutoring in reading, spelling, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. Instruction includes phonics, phonological skills, fluency, morphology, and comprehension, along with multisensory activities, phonological word games, and the use of decodable books. Each student receives Structured Literacy instruction that is Orton-Gillingham-based and includes Kilpatrick phonological awareness training, and tutoring begins with a literacy evaluation of phonological awareness, phonics, and spelling skills.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Tutoring sessions are offered 2–5 times per week, including daytime, evenings, weekends, during the school year and summers; sessions are 45 or 60 minutes, and most students do 3 or more sessions per week.
Kids Up Reading Tutors focuses on students with dyslexia, twice-exceptional (2e) profiles, learning disabilities, or those needing enrichment. Before tutoring begins, the program provides a comprehensive literacy evaluation and creates an individualized Structured Literacy Plan for each student. Parents receive Progress Charts and weekly updates and are welcome to sit in on sessions. The program offers a free 30-minute introductory call and demo, and a “Zoom Guarantee” that allows families to try it for a week; if they do not love it, that week is free. The program works with students in grades 1–12 in public, private, religious, international, and homeschool settings across the U.S. and with American and other English-speaking families living abroad, including students attending schools such as All Hallows, Bishop's School, The Cambridge School, Evans, Francis Parker, Gillispie School, La Jolla Country Day, La Jolla Elementary, Roosevelt International Middle School, San Diego Jewish Academy, San Diego French American School, Muirlands, the Waldorf School, and other San Diego public and private schools.
Kids Up Reading Tutors was founded by Daniela Feldhausen, a former attorney turned literacy specialist, based on the belief that every child who struggles with reading or spelling deserves expert, individualized instruction, a real plan, a real relationship, and a finish line in sight. The leadership team includes Founder Daniela Feldhausen, Tutor Supervisor and Senior Tutor Crystal McCue, and Head of Tutoring and Senior Tutor Laurie Warner. The team includes certified teachers, reading specialists, Special Education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and linguists, and all tutors complete the Kids Up Literacy Educator Training Program in Structured Literacy, which covers the Science of Reading, Orton-Gillingham (phonics, fluency, morphology, and spelling), and Kilpatrick (phonological skills). Individual staff credentials include degrees and training in Business Administration, Law, Special Education, Elementary Education, Speech and Hearing Science, Linguistics, Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Applied Behavior Analysis, and certifications such as Teaching Reading Effectively and the Structured Literacy Classroom Teacher Certificate from the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI).
Kids Up Reading Tutors is listed in the Provider Directory of the International Dyslexia Association. Testimonials from parents describe students’ improved reading, spelling, and enjoyment of reading, appreciation for tutors’ work, and positive experiences with specific tutors such as Daniela, Caitlin, and Jake, including one child’s poem about feeling good when their reading teacher is excited.
