About

Inner Spark Learning Lab focuses on teaching Black and Brown students to design the world they want to live in. Learning at Inner Spark Learning Lab tackles real-world problems and curiosities that matter to students and their neighborhoods, and students make meaningful choices, exhibit their work publicly, and see themselves as change-makers. Every student is known by name and story, and connection replaces compliance in how the program is run.

Inner Spark Learning Lab has been learning and experimenting since 2018. Its mission is teaching Black and Brown students to design the world they want to live in and ending the disconnection crisis by reconnecting youth to self, community, and possibility. The program reports that 94% of youth feel a greater sense of ownership over their learning and that 85% of youth feel more connected to their community, with 41,279 students served.

One student shared, “Inner Spark taught me to believe in my voice and my ability to make a difference. Now, I feel confident in my path forward.” A principal described it by saying, “Inner Spark is a great partnership. Our attendance has increased because students do not want to miss their Inner Spark classes.” Families and community members can also engage through options to nominate a school that could benefit from this approach and to explore volunteer opportunities for individuals and companies.
