About

Color Compton Youth Programming introduces youth to various topics and art mediums to help them create a project of their choice. Participants learn more about history and art while building relationships, meeting artists, visiting museums, and participating in galleries. All students complete a project and present it at the end of the internship in a community-wide art gallery exhibition, and they also take part in community workshops led by Color Compton staff and students that touch on art, history, identity, and community.

• Ages: 13–19 years old
• Schedule: 6 week paid internship opportunity

Color Compton Youth Programming is part of an arts and history organization grounded on theories and concepts of art making, storytelling, identity, community, and history. The program introduces various art outlets to youth as a form of self-expression and creating narratives, and offers private tours, workshops, trainings, and customized curriculum. Students in the cohort program receive mentorship from Compton community members and artists, and students in the cohort program receive priority in the Summer Internships offered every summer. The mission of Color Compton is to disrupt the single and limited story of marginalized communities such as Compton by serving as a pillar in the community where Black and Brown histories and art are honored and preserved, and to elevate youths’ artistic skills and education to foster future art abolitionists. Color Compton is a registered 501(c)3 organization.

The program envisions a collective community within Compton and encourages youth to relate their own identity with the collective identity and to engage, empower, and collaborate with the local community. Along with youth programs, Color Compton offers a variety of workshops open to the community and invites residents from the city of Compton to join its network to learn about opportunities to volunteer and mentor high school students. Requirements for applicants include being between 13–20 years old, being a resident of Compton or a surrounding city, and being able to commit to the full program; year-round program requirements include being a resident from Compton or a surrounding city.
