Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986. The program’s mission is that Farm Sanctuary fights the disastrous effects of animal agriculture on animals, the environment, social justice, and public health through rescue, education, and advocacy. School group tours are limited to ages 12 and older, and admission charges are waived for middle school and high school children visiting as part of a school group tour. Private tours are available for groups of up to 8 guests and are led by a Sanctuary Guide. Farm Sanctuary does not discriminate against sanctuary visitors on the basis of a person’s disability and will work to provide reasonable accommodations, with manual wheelchairs permitted in certain enclosures, while power wheelchairs are not permitted in any animal area and wheelchairs or walkers cannot be brought in with the cattle or pigs; staff will try to facilitate cattle and pig interactions over the fence or gate. Guests are asked to arrive 15 minutes ahead of their tour, and visits are approximately an hour long.

The Sanctuaries are home to approximately 100 rescued farm animals, including cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and other farm animals, each with a special story. The animals began their lives abused and neglected and now spend their days digging in the dirt, basking in the sun, and napping in the straw, and each animal is given the freedom and attention needed not only to recover but to thrive. The road through the shelter area is largely composed of compacted dirt and gravel, can be slippery when wet and dusty when dry, and short segments of the tour path have a steep grade, with connections to animal enclosures that may include grassy areas and uneven terrain, and there is limited shade and seating areas while on the tour. The Sanctuary Shop is open for 30 minutes before and after each public tour.

A visitor testimonial describes Farm Sanctuary as “An amazing, must-see place,” and notes bringing a 19-month-old child who “loved being able to interact with all the animals” and that “We learned so much,” according to Ela in a Farm Sanctuary Visitor Facebook Review.
