Island City Jiu-Jitsu describes itself as Alameda's premier martial arts academy, with a state of the art facility, a welcoming community, and a flexible schedule with multiple class times for adults and youth. The mission of Island City Jiu-Jitsu is to guide students in becoming their best selves, with energetic and dedicated instructors and a community focused on Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA. The program states that its highly skilled team is committed to teaching everything there is to know about martial arts and that classes are kept uplifting and fun while students improve confidence and technique.

The leadership team includes Owner and Head Coach Zach Costa, BJJ Instructor Vasja Volin, BJJ Instructor Austin Glushenko, Kids BJJ and Flexibility Instructor Margie Hunt, and Muay Thai Kickboxing Instructor Uche Mowete. Vasja is a brown belt with a decade of BJJ experience. Austin is a purple belt under Diogo Gomes at Rio Combat and an active competitor. Margie holds a blue belt and has a background in gymnastics, dance, yoga, and fitness competitions. Uche has nearly 19 years of martial arts experience, starting with traditional arts and Taekwondo before mastering Muay Thai.

Island City Jiu-Jitsu is partnered with the We Defy Foundation, which provides combat veterans a long-term way to overcome their challenges through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. One parent review from Russell Kelly-Gordon notes that the gym is very nice, with a big screen TV, arcade game, comfortable chairs, a large and clean mat space, and a good mix of students at different levels in grappling, kickboxing, or MMA classes. Another review from Timothy Balmorez describes the gym as spotless, with top-notch, well-maintained equipment, highly skilled instructors, and a strong sense of community among beginners and advanced fighters. A review from Nicholas Cheung highlights Coach Zach and Coach Uche, describing the Muay Thai classes as a balance of technique and conditioning that work for both beginners and more experienced students.
