• Ages: 3½–18 years old
Founded in 1967 by Grandmaster Lee, East West Kung Fu Schools has served the East Bay for over 50 years. The system of Bok Fu Do was developed by Senior Grandmaster Richard Lee and is described as a comprehensive Chinese kung fu system that emphasizes fluid, circular movements and practical, modern self-defense. Bok Fu Do translates to the “System of the White Tiger,” and one of its core principles is to use an opponent’s force against them and redirect it, rather than meeting it head-on.
East West Kung Fu is described as the premiere Chinese Martial Arts School in America, with an instructor staff of over 40 certified World Class Black Belts. All sessions are led by IBFDA-certified instructors, and the program states that safety is the highest priority in every class, supported by a healthy student-to-instructor ratio. Children can begin the Youth Kung Fu program as early as age 3½ years old, and beginners start with foundational techniques, non-contact drills, and basic forms, with sparring and partner drills introduced progressively and always carefully supervised. The principle that “the greatest skill is control” is described as being at the heart of their safety culture.
The curriculum is described as intentionally designed to build character and instill essential life skills, with an emphasis on unshakable confidence, improved focus, strong discipline, and greater respect. The mission statement is “UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL Get World Class Training, Build Strength And Lifelong Friendships. Inspiring One Quality Student At A Time Since 1967.” Families are offered a free introductory lesson to assess readiness for the classroom environment, and the program invites prospective students to try a class for free.
East West Kung Fu Schools is described as actively serving San Ramon, Alamo, and Lafayette. Parent testimonials mention improvements in children’s focus, attitude, and skills, and note experiences with supportive and fun instructors who provide focus, exercise, discipline, and encouragement. One testimonial highlights a women’s self-defense seminar and describes the time, effort, communication, and sense of community at the school.
