Main Beach Volleyball Club was formed in Santa Cruz County in 2002 as a California non-profit corporation to provide a competitive junior volleyball program for local female athletes. In 2010, the boys program was added, and in 2012, the sand program was added. In 2016, Lucas Bol split off the sand program to form the Santa Cruz Beach Volleyball Club, and in the summer of 2022, Justin Bates formed the boys club Kinnect Volleyball. In 2027, Main Beach Volleyball Club will be celebrating 25 years of operation from 2002 to 2027.
Main Beach Volleyball Club is overseen by a seven-member board from the local community who meet monthly, with leadership roles including President Barb McAteer, Vice President Erik Nelson, Treasurer Wendy Grande, Secretary Meg Hall, Member at Large Renee DeAngelis, Parent Advisor Rich Taylor, Executive Director Jan Furman, Program Director Branden Torado, Administrative Director Gabrielle Houston Neville, and Accounting handled by Kim Mindling. Both Executive Director Jan Furman and Administrative Director Gabby (Gabrielle) Houston Neville have been Kinesiology instructors at Cabrillo College.
The stated goals of Main Beach Volleyball Club are to provide a healthy competitive environment for all players, improve the skill level of the athlete, prepare athletes to compete at the college level, and provide a coaching staff that is knowledgeable about the game and communicates well with players. The club’s goals also include providing a high level of technical training through structured and disciplined practices, competing at the highest level through the NCVA power league and other competitive tournaments, qualifying for Junior Nationals, and providing a complete and competitive volleyball club to meet the needs of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties.
Main Beach has a history of developing players and coaches and has been instrumental in helping over 100 Main Beach athletes play volleyball at all levels in college. Coaching staff and players from Main Beach have continued their volleyball careers coaching at the Division I, Division II, and junior college levels. The club uses a comprehensive approach to volleyball that enables players to build on their skills, using Gold Medal Squared as the baseline for instruction, and uses facilities, equipment, and technology to provide a complete volleyball education. Main Beach has also helped launch sand and boys programs to serve the Santa Cruz volleyball community.
