Friendship House After School Program is part of Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK), which was established in 1965 and administers more than a dozen programs. The Friendship House provides educational and recreational services to children from low-income families and offers resources for the entire community, including food distribution, job training, and an outreach center. Slots are open for this year’s After School Program at Friendship House Community Center, with a limited number of openings. Staff leadership for CAPK includes Vipassana Chawla – Program Administrator; Loretta Andrews – Utility Assistance & Outreach Manager; and Abran Gonzalez – Weatherization Manager. Community Action Partnership of Kern states that it is committed to addressing poverty through direct services, advocacy, and locally driven solutions that promote dignity and self-sufficiency in the communities it serves. Through collaborations with other human service agencies and non-profit organizations, CAPK reports that it has been able to help economically disadvantaged residents pursue educational goals, secure and retain employment, maintain housing, access medical services, obtain utility bill payment subsidies and residential weatherization assistance, counteract hunger and food insecurity, obtain child care and preschool education, and engage in personal and family development opportunities.
