Baseball has been played in Belmont since 1895, and Little League was founded in 1939 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Belmont was one of the original Little Leagues formed in California in 1957 and started play in 1958 as part of District 11. District 52 was formed in 1966, and the old Marina field, built in 1967, used a classic “sunken diamond” design, with its home plate now on display in the Snack Shack. From 1981 to 1983 an “A” division for T-Ball was played, the league was reorganized in 1984, and a dedicated T-Ball division was added in 1993. The league was renamed Belmont-Redwood Shores Little League in 1998, Farm was split in two and Minors divisions were renamed in 2000, the T-Ball division was split into T-Ball Rookies and T-Ball Veterans in 2014, and an Intermediate (50/70) division for 13-year-old players was added in 2016.

Belmont-Redwood Shores Little League has competed in the International Little League All-Star tournament from the start. The league’s first District Championship came in 1986, and its first Sectional and State Championship came in 2013. The program has earned four Majors District 52 titles (1986, 2000, 2013, 2016), as well as titles in the 9/10 division (1997, 2011), 10/11 division (2012, 2016), and Big League 16–18 division (1981, 1982, 1984?, 1985). The Belmont team won the District 52 championship in 1981, 1982, and 1985, with a possible additional title in 1984.

Belmont-Redwood Shores Little League has grown over time, fielding between 6 and 8 Majors teams in most years and reaching 9 Majors teams for the first time in 2014. The league crossed 500 players for the first time in 1998, 600 players in 2010, and 700 players in 2014. In 2016, the league reached its largest size with a record 59 teams.

Belmont and Redwood Shores kids play baseball in this league with support from volunteers who serve as coaches, scorekeepers, umpires, field prep crew, safety officers, team parents, photographers, fundraisers, alumni, and Board members. Families, sponsors, and the Belmont Parks and Recreation department support the league, and their contributions have funded rehabilitation of the Nesbit and Marina Cages and Marina Field. All fields used by the league are managed and maintained by the City of Belmont Parks and Recreation department. The “Foul Ball Dance” fundraiser became a joint event with the Babe Ruth league and the girls’ softball “Bobby Sox” league.
