Carlmont Parents Nursery School is a parent participation, co-operative, play-based developmental preschool for children ages 20 months to 6 years, founded in 1961 and with over 60 years of experience. The children’s program is described as providing a gradual and smooth transition into formal education through guided exploration and experimentation in a setting with developmentally appropriate activities and open-ended exploration. The school describes itself as a “doing place” with a variety of age-appropriate activities going on at the same time, where children can move freely throughout the school, choose their own activities, and set their own pace, with a maximum of 24 students per camp session.

For parents, Carlmont Parents Nursery School describes itself as a “sharing place” that offers mutual support and exchange of information, with a goal of helping parents improve communication skills and broaden their knowledge to meet the emotional, physical, social, and intellectual needs of family members. Parents are expected to co-op just once per session or may choose a $50 co-op buyout if available, and children must bring their own packed, nut-free lunch from home for Lunch Bunch.

The program states a commitment to becoming an anti-racist, multicultural, inclusive, and affirming organization, including an annual multicultural potluck during the Winter Celebration. Students are admitted without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, age, ethnic or national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. Carlmont Parents Nursery School is affiliated with the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, the San Mateo Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, and Sequoia Adult School, and as a member of Sequoia Adult School, it offers monthly workshops in child development and early childhood education, plus hands-on experience and coaching in the classroom.

Summer camp is led by Pre-K teacher Lori, and the board includes roles such as President, VP Operations, VP Membership, Treasurer, Media Coordinator, Secretary, Fundraising Chair, Alumni Chair, and Community Chair, each with a listed email contact.
