About
Carlmont Parents Nursery School is a parent participation, co-operative, play-based developmental preschool where children engage in guided exploration and experimentation as well as open-ended exploration. Children can move freely throughout the school, choosing their own activities and setting their own pace within a safe and loving environment full of developmentally appropriate activities.
• Ages: 20 months–6 years old
Founded in 1961, Carlmont Parents Nursery School reports over 60 years of experience as a preschool. The children’s program is described as providing a gradual and smooth transition into formal education and prioritizes the development of life skills, positive self-image, social skills, emotional regulation, and physical coordination. The school states a goal of helping parents improve their communication skills and broaden their knowledge to meet the emotional, physical, social, and intellectual needs of family members. As a member of Sequoia Adult School, the program offers monthly workshops in child development and early childhood education, along with hands-on experience and coaching in the classroom for parents.
Carlmont Parents Nursery School describes itself as a community of children, parents, and teachers working together with the common goal of stronger, healthier families, made up of like-minded parents who choose to be actively involved in their children’s education and commit their talents and time. The school is affiliated with the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, the San Mateo Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, and Sequoia Adult School. The program states a commitment to becoming an anti-racist, multicultural, inclusive, and affirming organization, with a curriculum shaped by family traditions, an annual multicultural potluck during the Winter Celebration, and a policy of admitting students regardless of race, color, ethnic and national origin. It states that it does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, age, ethnic or national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, and notes that it advertises the possibility for financial assistance, partners with aides or therapists on a child’s support team, and provides accommodations individually as needed.
The school notes that it has 5 classrooms and a large outdoor area, with space for children to play inside or outside and to have quiet time, active time, alone time, or together time. The leadership team includes roles such as President, VP Operations, VP Membership, Treasurer, Media Coordinator, Secretary, Fundraising Chair, Alumni Chair, and Community Chair, each with a dedicated email contact. Carlmont Parents Nursery School states that it is now enrolling for the 2026–2027 school year.
