Broadway Babies and Kids offers a 2-week intro of group classes that includes a free leotard for new students. The program includes an Adaptive arts program described as a 45-minute performing arts program designed for every child to shine, a My Grown Up and Me program described as a preschool style experience that is unique and engaging, and a pre-professionals program that is audition only and offers top of the line musical theatre training. Students can join a Competition Team where they train in musical theatre, dance, voice, and acting and compete at the highest level, and they can participate in Indian Fusion Dance, described as a blend of classical Indian styles and contemporary movement with both children’s and adult classes culminating in a live performance. Broadway Vocal Technique & Performance is described as a premier program for students aged 5 and up, and full productions combine acting, singing, and dancing to create shows twice a year, along with semi-annual Student Showcases and full productions as regular performances. The program also offers Youth Musical Theatre Summer Camps in Rocklin and the Bay Area, as well as adult dance programs described as a luxury fitness experience that goes beyond the typical workout.
The program’s mission states that it believes in the power of the performing arts to build healthy bodies and minds, instill discipline, foster teamwork, and develop creative problem-solving skills. Director Katie Kerwin holds a B.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts CAP21 Conservatory and is a Bay Area native and alum of the Westlake School for the Performing Arts and Schumacher School of Dance. Her career spans more than 30 years of performing professionally and teaching acting, voice, and dance, and she has devoted the past 14 years to leading the Musical Theatre Program at the Westlake School for the Performing Arts and Schumacher School of Dance. She is a proud member of the Actor’s Equity Association, an accomplished figure skater and ice dancer, and has served as assistant to the Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Florida. Katie’s award-winning musical theatre and Broadway vocal programming have earned acclaim for their excellence and transformative impact on participants, and her talents have been showcased on national stages, including the TONY award-winning production of Irving Berlin’s WHITE CHRISTMAS, where she is featured in the ensemble of the Broadway cast album released in 2006.
Through her leadership programming, American Musical Theatre Conservatory and Broadway Babies and Kids, and the non-profit organization Friends of Broadway Babies and Kids, Katie has made significant strides in making the performing arts accessible to all. Parent and student feedback includes comments that Broadway Babies and Kids is a fun place for little ones to sing, dance, and have indoor free play, and that owner and teacher Ms. Katie is outstanding and an expert at engaging kids of all ages and introducing them to musical concepts in a playful and effective way. Parents describe the studio as warm and welcoming, with kids gaining new skills and making friends, and one parent notes that a child who started as a young shy student has developed vocal and musical theatre acting skills and has achieved goals as an onstage Bay Area performer with lead and featured ensemble roles. Another parent shares that a child’s first production experience at Broadway Babies and Kids was positive and supportive, and a former student who is a current member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival states, “I truly would not be here without you!” One parent sums up that the staff and programs at Broadway Babies and Kids are engaging, warm, creative, and educational.
