About

Aikido of Berkeley Youth Programs offers Aikido training for children and teens that includes games and tumbling exercises. Children practice in a friendly, coed atmosphere. Specially qualified instructors use games, techniques, and tumbling exercises to teach children how to defend themselves without hurting others.

• Schedule: Classes available Monday–Thursday in the late afternoon and early evening

Aikido of Berkeley Youth Programs includes three classes for children ages 6–14: the Little Warriors class for ages 6–8, the Juniors Class for ages 9–14, and the Teens Class for ages 12 and up. The Little Warriors class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45–4:30pm and is limited to 8 students. The Juniors Class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00–6:00pm, and the Teens Class is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00–6:00pm. Aikido training in this program includes activities that improve strength, balance, physical coordination, and flexibility, and offers a workout that enhances agility and increases sports ability. The program states that Aikido offers families a new perspective on fitness, fun, and parental involvement.

The mission of the program is based on Aikido as a martial art that is not based on destruction, but on blending with an attacker to resolve conflict non-violently. The program states that Aikido teaches children how to cooperate and succeed. It also states that regular training will help children develop good learning skills and follow-through that gives children self-confidence. According to the program, Aikido of Berkeley youth programs will help children learn to make friends and avoid making enemies, take responsibility and consider others, relax in stressful situations, focus and concentrate, increase mind-body coordination, develop emotional intelligence, and sit quietly and listen attentively.

Aikido of Berkeley is a full-time Aikido dojo with an active training community offering classes 7 days a week, frequent guest instructors, and seminars presented by world-renowned teachers. The leadership team for youth programs includes Chief Instructor Kayla Feder Shihan, along with David Cicerchi Sensei (nidan, 2nd degree black belt), Adi Elkin Sensei (2nd Dan Black Belt), Suzanne Rudiger Sensei (Sandan, 3rd Degree Black Belt, ranked Nidan by Louis Jumonville 6th Dan Shihan of Hikari Dojo), and Guy Stevens Sensei (Nidan).
