Ralph Gracie Berkeley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is under the leadership of 5th degree black belt Eduardo Fraga, with a leadership team that includes Ralph Gracie and Eduardo Fraga. Ralph Gracie opened his first Bay Area academy in 1994, and the Ralph Gracie Berkeley Academy opened its doors in 2005. In 2008, Eduardo immigrated with his family to the US and joined the Ralph Gracie team. The program’s stated goal is to help every student perform at their best and reach their goals, whether related to competition, fitness, or self defense. The academy takes pride in the camaraderie and community that exists there. Eduardo’s individual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu accomplishments include being a 10-time medalist at the IBJJF Pan Americans (Black Belt) and a 7-time Sao Paulo State Champion. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at this academy is described as a grappling-centric art where the goal is to force an opponent into submission with joint locks and chokes, often referred to as “human chess,” and it is presented as an essential part of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and one of the most effective forms of self-defense. The program notes that Jiu-Jitsu is a way to improve physical fitness, balance, and coordination, and to build confidence, focus, and reduce stress, and that people of different ages and fitness levels can enjoy and benefit from practicing it. The academy offers a free trial class for those who want to start training.
