UC Berkeley Youth Recreation Summer Camps has been operating for more than 60 years. The UC Martial Arts Program, which is part of the broader offerings, began in 1969 as the first major university-based martial arts program in the nation and has a mission to preserve the philosophy, techniques, and traditions of martial arts while developing a scientific understanding of the physical and spiritual implications of human performance. Instruction in UC Martial Arts Program clubs is carried out by high-ranking instructors in their particular martial arts, and the program includes Olympic hopefuls and well-trained instructors. The program’s leadership includes Dr. Russell Ahn, Director of the UC Martial Arts Program, and Dr. Ken Min, who founded the first major university-based martial arts program in 1969.
The UC Martial Arts Program is described as an expanding, dynamic organization that combines athleticism and scholarship, vision and history, innovation and tradition. It received a one-million-dollar endowment from the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Korea and the World Taekwondo Federation, officially named the Ken Min Endowed Directorship for Taekwondo and the Martial Arts, which is described as unique in the United States academic community and establishes a permanent position for martial arts instruction at UC Berkeley. No other university in the United States has raised such an endowment for martial arts instruction. The Korean Ministry of Culture and Sports awarded this funding to ensure that the program would continue to teach Asian philosophy and culture. The program is open to UC Berkeley students and people who live or work in the Bay Area, and its six clubs organize and host instructional seminars, symposiums, and martial art camps, and participate in collegiate, national, and world competitions.
UC Berkeley Youth Recreation Summer Camps and UC Berkeley Recreation & Wellbeing report a “4 Stars on Yelp!” testimonial on their website. The Universal Locker Room is described as an award-winning facility.
