About

Bolinas Surf Lessons offers surf lessons, surf camps, and summer camps that focus on teaching surfing. The program uses specific surf spots known as The Channel and The Patch, with most level 1 classes and level 1 private lessons taught in The Channel and most level 2 classes and level 2 private lessons taught at The Patch. At The Channel, beginners practice popping up on the board in the white water, and it is not uncommon to catch 20 or 30 waves during a lesson there.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Surf lessons are offered from March through October.
• Price: Surfboards are included in the lessons price and 4/3mm wetsuit and booties are available for a $25 cleaning fee.

All equipment is available and can be reserved with a booking, and surfboards are included in the lesson price. A 4/3mm wetsuit and booties can be added for a $25 cleaning fee, and participants who need a wetsuit are asked to arrive 10 minutes before the lesson to put it on. Lessons are cancelled if a student arrives more than 30 minutes late to a private lesson or 10 minutes late to a group class. All participants must sign a digital waiver after booking, and each child’s digital waiver must be completed by that child’s actual parent or legal guardian.

Bolinas Surf Lessons was established in 1998 by Nick Krieger as the first surf school in Bolinas. The program describes itself as the Bay Area’s original surf school and notes that its technique has been used to teach people of all ages to surf for more than 20 years. In 2003, Nick started 2 Mile Surf Shop, sold that business in 2009, and in 2020 a fire destroyed the building that the surf shop was in and 2 Mile had to close. The program reports having 60+ 5-star reviews.

Bolinas is described as being at the southern end of the Point Reyes National Seashore, surrounded by ocean and parkland. Bolinas is considered to be the Bay Area’s best beginner beach, with surf that is protected from winds and large swells that can make other Northern California beaches more challenging for beginners. The area has two surf spots and breaks at almost every tide. The Channel is described as ideal for beginners practicing in the white water, while The Patch is a long, slow reef break for beginners and intermediate surfers who want to work on timing and maneuvering, where riders can catch waves before they break and get long, smooth rides to shore, with rides over 60 seconds timed there on some days.

Parent reviews mention semi-private and private lessons with instructors named Tosh, Chloe, and Nick, and describe instructors as informative, encouraging, and friendly. One parent notes that their daughter had a fantastic time in her first private lesson and mentions interest in returning for other camps and activities offered.
