Burbank Public Library Literacy Services offers free one-on-one tutoring sessions for adults who speak and understand English but read and write below the 8th grade level. It also offers English Naturally, a conversation group for beginner, intermediate, and advanced speakers, with sessions on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:00 pm, Wednesdays from 1:30-3:00 pm, Thursdays from 10:30 am-12:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:30 am-12:00 pm.
Programs
- Literacy Services — Adults 18 or older who speak and understand English but read and write below 8th grade level · One-on-one tutoring sessions twice a week after an interview and assessment · FREE tutoring. To enroll, schedule an interview; if qualified, learners are matched with a volunteer.
- English Naturally: a Conversation Group — All levels; beginner, intermediate, and advanced speakers · Tuesdays 4:30-6:00 pm; Wednesdays 1:30-3:00 pm; Thursdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm; Saturdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm · No registration required. In-person only for beginners on Saturdays at Buena Vista Branch Library.

Burbank Public Library has provided literacy services since 1992. The program’s mission is to help create a better informed community in which literacy helps parents read to their children, improves job prospects for adults, and leads families toward positive life choices. Burbank Public Library Literacy Services is a member of California Library Literacy Services and receives matching funds from the California State Library.
- Volunteer Tutors — 18 or older · Meet twice weekly with an adult learner for a minimum of six months · Volunteer tutors must be 18 or older. No experience is necessary.
An interview and an assessment to measure current reading abilities are required to enroll. If qualified, learners are matched with a volunteer for twice a week tutoring sessions.
