Pilgrim Children's Center is a social outreach program of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ and has serviced the Carlsbad community since 1974. It is an all-inclusive, non-discriminating preschool that welcomes children of all faiths and origins and embraces children from all types of families and lifestyles, including children of single parents, children with special physical and developmental challenges, children living with gay or lesbian parents, and children in displaced families. The program’s mission states that it is dedicated to serving the needs of children and their parents, developing curriculum and programming that develops every dimension of a child, prepares children for academic readiness, and equips them with skills to navigate through life.
The center describes itself as a play-based school that focuses on developmentally appropriate practices with a social/emotional curriculum and uses a creative curriculum that employs research-based practices in a play-based setting. Its teaching methodology is centered on enhancing physical development, cognitive learning, social, emotional and behavioral skills, and it promotes exploration, curiosity, problem solving, decision making, discovery and personal care routines. The program states that it understands the importance of providing outdoor learning opportunities and teaches earth-friendly values, and it describes its environment as a warm, comfortable place where children and families can feel welcome, with a caring and supportive staff.
Pilgrim Children's Center offers flexible scheduling to meet diverse needs in the community, including schedule options for working families, for families who want part-time socialization for their children, and for families who just need a couple of mornings a week. The toddler program focuses on social-emotional development, fostering self-help skills and independence, and language building. The preschool program develops communication and conversation skills, investigation skills, sharing space and materials, and early school readiness skills, while Pre-K classes include emergent writing, math and number sense, early literacy, STEM, and more. Infant rooms are now touring and accepting enrollment for full-time, immediate spots.
The center’s mission statement says it fosters sound human values of self-esteem, personal responsibility, cultural diversity, justice, peace and love, and that its programs strive to reflect a full cross-section of North Coastal San Diego County. It states that it welcomes children into a loving environment where each child’s uniqueness and self-worth are enhanced and celebrated, and that it considers the needs of both parents and children. The center believes in using all available community resources to provide a richer experience for children and parents and works to create awareness between the families served and other agencies that may provide needed services.
Pilgrim Children's Center recognizes in its mission that a quality staff is the essence of a quality program and that staff must be role models of the values it fosters, so it requires high standards of professionalism and integrity of all staff to nurture the growth of each child and to support all family members. The program states that its goal is to provide a valuable learning experience that will enable children to become confident and curious about the world around them and to help build a future of peace and understanding for all people. Date nights are for enrolled children only and let families have some time to themselves while their children are in a trusted place with their familiar teachers and friends. Pilgrim Children's Center holds License #372000455.
