Discovery Camps offers hands-on, educational lessons and activities built around a weekly theme, including nature walks, nature hikes, animal interactions, crafts, and take home recycled crafts. Each camp involves learning about nature in nature through these activities, with camp groups split by age ranges and capped at 12 campers per group with 1 teacher. Discovery Camps run in the fall, winter, and summer, with each week featuring a different theme and different activities.
• Ages: Kindergarten–5th grade
• Schedule: Weekly camps from 9:00am–3:30pm, with drop-off as early as 8:45am and pick-up as late as 3:45pm
• Price: $500 per week; June 29th–July 2nd (Monday–Thursday) priced at $400; Steward Level Members and above receive 20% off, or families may use a 10% sibling discount
All camp teachers are Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation employees in the Academy for Environmental Stewardship who teach there throughout the school year, with a teacher-to-student ratio of no more than 12 campers per teacher. Discovery Camps does not provide snack or lunch; each camper brings their own snack and lunch, and the camp day includes a snack and lunch break. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, formed in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, states that its mission is to energize people through education and outreach to preserve the Agua Hedionda Lagoon as an accessible and healthy watershed, and it is in the process of getting Discovery Camps accredited through the American Camp Association. The organization notes that its initiatives, including educational programs and events, are supported by citizens, grants, supporters, and members, and that it is stroller friendly.
