About
San Diego Sabers is a Junior A hockey program that includes 46 regular season games, a Las Vegas showcase, daily practices, game film sessions, and strength training. Players receive goaltending instruction, use a skating treadmill, review InStat reports, and take part in volunteer experience in the community. The program also includes team building activities such as hikes, golf, and attending professional sports games. Supplies and nutrition are provided for all games, including tape, wax, laces, healthy snacks, fruit, and sports-themed beverages, and skate sharpening is done before every game.
• Schedule: 46 regular season games with additional Las Vegas showcase games
The San Diego Sabers compete as a Junior A hockey team and are an affiliate of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), belonging to the league’s Pacific Division. The program’s stated number one priority is to prepare its student-athletes for the next step in their careers while developing them into future leaders. The Sabers were established in 2010 by former professional hockey player Tomas Kapusta, who serves as Director of Player Development and Associate Coach.
The coaching and support staff include Head Coach James Spaargaren, Goalie Coach Juha Kanervisto, Director of Player Development and Associate Coach Tomas Kapusta, and Executive Director Jeremy Blumes, who also serves as Head Coach and General Manager for the Ontario Jr Reign. Strength training is led by certified coaches in a professional gym, goaltending instruction is provided by Nick Cafrelli of Framingham State University, and certified athletic trainers with military experience support the team. Juha Kanervisto holds a Level 4 USA Hockey coaching certificate. Tomas Kapusta graduated from CSULA with a degree in social science and from CSULB with a teaching credential, and he teaches at Excel Charter School Academy as an educational specialist.
Tomas Kapusta took home the Elite Finnish League scoring title in 1993, was selected by the Edmonton Oilers 104th overall in the fifth round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, competed in all three Junior World Championships between 1985 and 1987, represented the Czech Republic at the 1993 World Championship in Germany and the 1994 Olympics in Norway, and was part of three championship teams in the Czech Republic Extra League. Jeremy Blumes earned the Hockey Calgary Coach of the Year award in 2014. Players receive media exposure through social media and live internet streaming on HockeyTV.com, and the program uses InStat reports to provide real-time feedback and advanced statistics, supporting development and player advancement through the USPHL.
The program arranges hotel accommodations with pre- and post-game meals on every road trip and uses supportive billet families that have been vetted by the organization. One parent testimonial from Nicole Lundy states that her son Lucas played his last season of junior hockey for the San Diego Sabers, describes positive team culture, development on and off the ice, excellent coaching, travel experiences, increased independence in a leadership role, and notes that his goal of moving on to play college hockey was a success, and that their family would recommend the program to other players and families thinking of the USPHL.
