About
Youth Basketball League (YBL) – Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad offers a structured Youth Basketball League with co-ed divisions where kids take part in basketball practices, games, and single-elimination playoffs. Each season begins with evaluations to help create even teams, followed by weekly practices and Saturday games, with every team participating in the playoffs and champions receiving medals. The program also offers a Spring Basketball Camp, a Summer 2026 Youth Basketball League, and a Winter Youth Basketball League.
• Ages: 6–13 years old
• Schedule: Each season includes 7 weekly practices and 7 games including playoffs, with practices on a weekday between 5:30–6:30pm or 6:30–7:30pm and games on Saturdays between 9am–3pm
The league uses structured divisions organized by grade: Orange Division (1st & 2nd grade), Blue Division (3rd & 4th grade), and White Division (5th & 6th grade). Orange Division plays on an 8-foot rim with a size 5 basketball, while Blue and White Divisions play on a 10-foot rim with a size 6 basketball. Orange Division games are normally at 9:30am and 10:30am, Blue Division game times are normally 11:30am and 12:30pm, and White Division typical game times are 1:30pm and 2:30pm. Divisions are not solely based on grade, and players may move based on comfort level, skill level, size, and speed. All divisions are co-ed, teams are allowed to join as a group, and all skill levels are welcome with everyone playing.
Each season starts with an evaluations day, the following week begins practices, and the first game is held on the Saturday of the first practice week. There are 6 weeks of regular season games, followed by single-elimination playoffs in the 7th week, which include food, games, and fun activities for the kids. Every team makes the playoffs. Jerseys and shorts are given out at the first game of the season, and jerseys are no longer included in registration but can be purchased for an additional cost by new players or returning players who need a new size or replacement.
Beginning in Spring 2026, practices are changing from a request-based system to a choice-based system, with multiple practice time options available for each division. Players can choose during registration whether they prefer hired coaches or volunteers. Financial aid is offered, and applying is described as easy and confidential. The program notes the use of state-of-the-art local gym facilities and an organized structure with professional coaching.
All coaches are hired with a previous background in basketball and receive training and support to provide positive instruction and mentorship. Every coach has prior playing or coaching experience in basketball and completes a comprehensive training program focused on skill development, youth engagement, and safety, and all coaches are hired trained professionals. The leadership team includes Chase Murray, who played at Carlsbad High School, led his team to a CIF Championship, was named San Diego’s best 3-point shooter, and later played at San Diego City College, and Isaiah Cole Jones, a former standout at Vista High School and Knox College who coaches at Valley Middle School Boys Basketball.
The league’s stated mission is to foster a love for basketball while promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and personal growth among young athletes in a positive and inclusive environment. It emphasizes engaging practices, competitive games, supportive coaching, fair play, respect for others, and the pursuit of excellence in sports and in life, with a focus on community, lifelong values, and helping youth become confident, responsible, and driven individuals.
The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad also serves athletes from Valley, Aviara, and Calavera Middle Schools through athletic programs that include friendly competitions, games, tournaments, and showcases. These activities bring kids from these schools together and allow families to gather to watch games, creating a sense of community around the youth basketball experience.
