About

Cazadero Music Camp offers Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Piano, Guitar, and an All Camp Choir, along with campfire activities. Campers rehearse and play outdoors, enjoy the creek and pool, and sleep under the stars as part of a sleep-away camp program that combines in-depth music education and summer camp fun. Musicians participate in Orchestra, Concert Band, or Jazz Ensemble and rehearse two to three times a day for 60–90 minutes preparing for a final performance.

• Ages: 9–18 years old

For over 60 years, Cazadero Music Camp has brought together youth from a broad range of backgrounds and music abilities to immerse themselves in a rich music curriculum, and for more than 65 years it has offered a dynamic summer camp program. The camp is set on 33 acres in the Sonoma County Redwood Forest under a canopy of redwood trees at a rustic campsite owned by the City of Berkeley, where campers rehearse, sleep, and play outdoors and camp in the redwoods. The leadership team includes Music Camp Director Carolyn Niehaus-Owen, Executive Director Emily Wainacht, Assistant Camp Director Jonathan Knight, Camp Registration Manager Emily Brockman, and Bookkeeper & Office Manager Debbie Buracker.

Cazadero Music Camp’s mission is to inspire a love of music and learning in youth by providing a nurturing, inspirational environment for young musicians ages 9–18. The music curriculum is designed to help students advance their musical skill with individual mentoring and several hours a day of group instruction, and large ensembles have a new guest conductor every week introducing challenging, interesting, and diverse repertoire. The camp reports that 97% of campers say their playing improved at Caz and that 100% of parents would recommend Caz to a friend, and its scholarship program helps hundreds of young musicians with financial need take part each year.

Cazadero inspires over 1,400 youth each year through its Summer Music Camp and its JumpStart in Music program. JumpStart in Music is a low-cost, high-impact three-day condensed immersion program for Bay Area public school students, their music teachers, and high school mentors, and it supports public school music programs. Campers at Cazadero Music Camp enjoy the creek, pool, campfire, and sleeping under the stars as part of what the camp describes as a true camp experience.
