Mi Escuelita Therapeutic Preschool is described as “A place for children to learn, play and heal.” The program is part of SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services), which provides services and supports throughout San Diego County. Mi Escuelita Therapeutic Preschool held a preschool graduation celebrating resilience and healing for children impacted by domestic violence, where 16 children walked across the stage to receive their recognition.

SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services) has been helping San Diego children and families reach their full potential for 50 years. The organization’s mission is to transform communities to support the well-being and prosperity of children, youth and families throughout San Diego County, and its services and supports touch the lives of more than 50,000 people each year. SBCS manages a cradle to career continuum of services for three underserved communities within San Diego County, provides housing programs serving 1,200 residents, and offers Youth Development & Education, Family Wellness, and Community Engagement services.

The leadership team connected to SBCS includes Annie Sawyer (Director of Philanthropic Giving); Sandy Keaton, MA (Director of the Youth & Community Wellness Department); Stacey Musso, MA, LMFT (Director of the Behavioral Health & Wellness Department); Valerie Brew, MA (Director of the Child Well-Being & Family Wellness Department); Larissa Tabin, MS (Vice President of Development and Philanthropy); Ismena Valdez (Vice President of Business Operations); Mauricio Torre (Vice President of Program Operations); Elizabeth Iniguez, CPA (Chief Financial Officer); and Kathryn Lembo (President and CEO). Kathryn Lembo is responsible to an 11-member Board of Directors for overall administration of the agency, which operates on an annual budget of over $95 million, employs a staff of 400 professionals supported by over 1,200 community volunteers, and touches the lives of over 50,000 people annually, including 1,200 residents in housing programs.

SBCS has been recognized as a Public Health Champion and local leader in Child Abuse Prevention, with Family Stabilization Services overseen by Valerie Brew contributing to this recognition. The agency reports providing 50,000 critical services, 21,658 healthy meals, 3,745 families saved from homelessness, 2,840 hours of outpatient therapy, and 335 children receiving mental health support.
