About

Claremont After-School Programs (CLASP) offers after-school tutoring, homework help, and enrichment activities for elementary students who need extra academic support. Volunteer tutors provide homework help in person at neighborhood sites for 90 minutes each day, two days a week, and also serve as mentors while working with students. The program serves approximately 80 students each year and offers individualized help to students who have been recommended by their teachers as having a need for this service.

• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Volunteer tutors provide homework help in person at neighborhood sites for 90 minutes each day, two days a week.

CLASP is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that continues to be the only nonprofit, nonsectarian organization in Claremont to offer after-school homework help and enrichment activities to elementary students in the Claremont Unified School District. Transportation is provided to some centers. Volunteer tutors donate over 10,000 hours of service each year.

The CLASP leadership team includes a part-time paid staff with a Program Director, Assistant Program Director, a Tutor Coordinator, four site supervisors, and several assistants. Named site supervisors include Susan Castle, Ben Martinez, Cristina Moreno, and Maria Martinez.

The mission of CLASP is to help elementary-school children enhance their academic, organizational and social skills by providing high-quality, after-school programs in Claremont Unified School District neighborhoods. In 1994, the City of Claremont, Claremont Unified School District, and many community volunteers created Claremont’s first Youth Master Plan, and in response, volunteers from the Pomona Valley Section of the National Council of Negro Women and from St. Ambrose Episcopal Church formed two tutoring programs that merged in 2005 to become CLASP.

CLASP collaborates with the Claremont Unified School District and the City of Claremont, as well as many local nonprofits, local businesses, regional foundations, and individuals from the community. Over 30 community members volunteer on the board of directors and board committees, providing administrative and program services.

Student comments about CLASP include: “Without my tutor I would probably get my homework done, but I wouldn’t understand it” (2022 student), “CLASP is a real life changer. Before I was in CLASP I would never do my homework but when I entered the CLASP tutoring I started doing my homework” (2021 student), and “I love my tutor because when I come into the classroom... I am the happiest person on earth, because when I don’t know how to do it, she teaches me in a way nobody else does” (2023 student).
