Goltz Judo
Alexander Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd., Claremont, CA 91711
About
Goltz Judo offers training in judo that includes workouts and general skill development in both tachi waza (standing techniques) and ne waza (ground techniques). Classes include a vigorous warm up, yoga style stretching, falling exercises, ground fighting drills, throwing technique practice with a partner, and randori (free practice) where students are paired off to fight each other for timed rounds with short breaks in between. Training also includes shiais (tournaments) and basic punches, kicks, knees, and elbows as part of regular practice.
Goltz Judo was established in 1987. The program is led by Sensei Gary Goltz, 9th Dan, who is the founder and head instructor. The program describes judo as a way to use both physical and spiritual strength, with training in attacks and defenses that refines body and soul and makes the spiritual essence of judo part of the student’s being, connecting this to striving toward self perfection (Maslow's Self Actualization) and contributing something of value back to society.
Goltz Judo is described as a fun, effective, and affordable Olympic martial art in Claremont, CA. New students are always welcome and are encouraged to advance at a pace comfortable to them, and potential students are encouraged to watch a class first, with the note that once enrolled, regular attendance is expected. The program states that judo is ideal for developing confidence in children to help prevent bullying, for Veterans Judo USA (active judoka over 30), and for use by law enforcement, security, or airline personnel.
The dojo (training hall) is described as sacred, and the teacher is always referred to as a sensei (one who came before). The program outlines key rules for bowing, including Eshaku (informal), Keirei (formal), and Saikeirei (deep), with guidance on the duration and depth of each. Sensei Gary received a Mayor Certificate on 2/21/2012, and the program notes a visit by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Hughes Center in 2005.
