STEM Center USA Summer Camps
Claremont STEM Center, 855 W Foothill Blvd, Claremont, CA 91711
About
STEM Center USA Summer Camps offer summer STEM camps where students work on robotics, game design, coding, electronics, 3D printing, maker and DIY creations, soldering, and creative robotics. The program’s experiential curriculum has students learning how to build robots, code programs, and make inventions, with activities that gradually increase in difficulty. A sample camp day includes time to check in and connect, warm up, dive into STEM topics, engage with projects, and wrap up by showing what they worked on.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Sample day runs from 8:45 AM–12:00 PM with check-in, warm up, STEM lessons, snack breaks, project time, and a daily review and showcase
STEM Center USA was founded in October 2011 by sisters Melissa and Lavanya Jawaharlal, known as The Jawa Sisters, who both graduated with degrees in Mechanical Engineering from USC and UC Berkeley. The 2026 season is their fifteenth summer running summer camps. The mission of STEM Center USA is “to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.”
Instructors are highly trained STEM instructors who use guided-discovery pedagogy and a learn-by-doing teaching style. The team includes inspirational collegiate instructors from universities such as Harvey Mudd College, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, Harvard, UPenn, and Georgetown. All instructors are background checked at the Department of Justice and FBI level, and instructors are also CPR trained. In-person instructors include college students at local universities, and virtual instructors sign in from locations across the country.
STEM Center USA supplies all necessary materials for camp activities, and participants bring a reusable water bottle and 2–3 snacks for snack breaks. For some Rancho Cucamonga computer-based camps, bringing a personal laptop is encouraged so students can continue working on projects after camp, but laptops are available for all students to use. Virtual camps are offered in small groups and are described as flexible and fun.
STEM Center USA runs K–12 summer camps local to its STEM Centers and also hosts camps at schools and universities across Southern California, as well as programs throughout Southern California and worldwide. The Rancho Cucamonga STEM Center is a 3000+ square foot creativity center with an open-flow classroom layout to encourage student collaboration, and it includes dedicated summary and showcase time at the end of every day from 11:50–12:00. At Claremont STEM Center, groups are kept small with a maximum of 8 students for personalized instruction, and at Claremont El Roble, student materials are brought to check-out tables each day for physical camps.
STEM Center USA offers Roboreka, a creative robotics challenge for 3rd–12th graders. The organization becomes a vendor for more than 12 homeschool charters throughout Southern California. STEM Center USA is described as an outstanding supporter of STEM educational opportunities in Claremont schools and a generous sponsor of the Claremont Educational Foundation’s annual, hands-on Family Coding Night event.
STEM Center USA has been featured on Season 7, Episode 6 of ABC’s Shark Tank and received two offers from Chris Sacca and Lori Greiner. The organization was awarded a $50,000 grant from Lending Tree in its inaugural small business contest, selected from over 1,100 applicants. Melissa and Lavanya have been invited to the Official Residence of the Vice President and recognized by former Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, and they have spoken at TEDxCPP on “Roots of STEM Education.”
Parent testimonials describe STEM Center USA as a constant source of education and inspiration, with staff who are dedicated, caring, and devoted to providing a rich experience for students. Parents report that the programs engage, challenge, entertain, educate, and inspire creativity and curiosity in technology, and that children look forward to attending. School and district partners note that the Jawa Sisters are a “dynamic duo” in STEM education, that instructors in special programs are patient and ready to give one-on-one support, and that STEM Center USA is an outstanding supporter of STEM opportunities in local schools. Student testimonials mention enjoying building and programming robots, making robots move, play sounds, and change colors, and appreciating creative projects, fun learning, and instructors who are funny, nice, and helpful.
